TURMERIC FOR JAUNDICE: FRIEND OR ENEMY

Turmeric the wonderful, versatile herb has been used by many different cultures, to treat a myriad of diseases and ailments. Turmeric has been used as an anti-inflammatory agent in the treatment of sprains, cramps, bruises, and muscle pain. The healing properties of turmeric lie in the golden fingerlike stalk, or rhizome, the same part that is used to flavor, color, and preserve food. Turmeric is commonly found in Indian curries, giving the food a golden orange color. Turmeric has hundreds of molecular constituents, each with a variety of biological activities. Clinical and laboratory research indicates that diets that include turmeric or curcumin "stabilize and protect biomolecules in the body at the molecular level", which is shown in its anti-oxidant, anti-mutagenic and anti-carcinogenic action. It is a cholagogue, stimulating bile production in the liver and encouraging excretion of bile via the gallbladder. This improves the body's ability to digest fats. For chronic digestive weakness and/or congestion turmeric is recommended. In spring more consumption of herbs and foods can strengthen the liver. It is said to shrink engorged hepatic ducts, so it can be useful to treat liver conditions such as hepatitis, cirrhosis, and jaundice. In Jharkhand jaundice is one of the very common diseases. People here believe that in jaundice one must not take yellow color food, so they use to avoid turmeric in jaundice instead of the fact that turmeric is a traditional remedy for jaundice and other liver ailments. So, keeping this in mind a small survey was carried out in Jharkhand. Our study suggests that most of the people here are firm believer of the myth that Turmeric cannot be given at time of jaundice. 95% does not know that turmeric is a good remedy for liver ailments. 90% of patients refuse to take turmeric when suggested by Dietician. Our study suggested that an awareness program is a must to help people know about goodness of this wonder drug.

  2. Dear Rahul,
Jaundice is Known as "Pelia" in Hindi that mean Yellow. In this condition the body color becomes yellow due to high level of bilirubin. Turmric also imparts yellow color to our skin. So, it becomes difficult to differentiate Yellow color of our body due to turmeric or due to Jaundice. So, the earlier "Vaidh" use to avoid turmeric so, that they can identify the yellow color due to disease. But they were also aware of the fact that Turmeric heals Jaundice.

  5. PS Negi,

The diet u r giving to your daughter is very low in minerals and vitamins, it may make ur daughter very week. So give him normal diet like.. light fried daal, light fried green vegetables and juices. Turmeric doesn,t harm during jaundice. It is a medicine. So give her norma ldiet and for medicine these are enough as no medicine is reported for janudice.

  7. In mild or moderate levels of jaundice, by 1 to 2 weeks of age the baby will take care of the excess bilirubin on its own. For high levels of jaundice, phototherapy — treatment with a special light that helps rid the body of the bilirubin by altering it or making it easier for your baby's liver to get rid of it — may be used.More frequent feedings of breast milk or supplementing with formula to help infants pass the bilirubin in their stools may also be recommended. In rare cases, a blood exchange may be required to give a baby fresh blood and remove the bilirubin. If your baby develops jaundice that seems to be from breast milk, your doctor may ask you to temporarily stop breastfeeding. During this time, you can pump your breasts so you can keep producing breast milk and you can start nursing again once the condition has cleared.

If the amount of bilirubin is high, your baby may be readmitted to the hospital for treatment. Once the bilirubin level drops and the treatment is stopped, it is unlikely that treatment for jaundice will need to be restarted.

  8. For older children and adults:
The treatment given to someone with jaundice will depend on what type they have, how serious it is and what caused it.
Healthy fruits, fruit veg juices and vegetables - raw or steamed in diet help the liver detoxify.
It may include tackling an underlying condition such as malaria and bothersome symptoms, such as itching.
For genetic conditions that don't get better, like sickle cell anaemia, a blood transfusion may be given to replenish red blood cells in the body.
If the bile duct system is blocked, an operation may be needed to unblock it. During these procedures measures may be taken to help prevent further problems, such as removal of the gallbladder.
If the liver is found to be seriously damaged, a transplant may be an option.

    Preventing jaundice in adults:
As many things can cause jaundice, it is hard for doctors to give specific prevention advice in all cases.
General tips include avoiding hepatitis infection, staying within recommended alcohol limits, maintaining healthy weight and managing cholesterol.

His time at MD Anderson ended yesterday, 7/7/15, due to the fact that his bili is roughly on average 18. his doctor has released him from his care due to the risks associated with his bili being so high. We are currently trying to find care through another cancer center.
